Love, Simon (spoilers maybe?)
DID ANYONE NOTICE IN THE BACKGROUND OF ONE OF THE SCENES THAT SIMON IS A HUFFLEPUFF????
you’re damn right i did!
Further reason i related too much to Simon.
Love, Simon, is the film 13-year-old me desperately needed to see.
I’ll start with this, its heart warming, genuinely well-acted with a great cast, soundtrack, editing and jokes. In fact, it had me in stitches several times because of the excellent humour. But more than that, it was relatable. Simon is relatable. He is flawed, dorky and has a lot of stupid moments, he also lashes out from frustration, makes stupid decisions, and faces consequences (genuine consequences) for them. But he is also aware of the fact that he has a great life. His parents are delightful, his little sister and friends are great to him, he has a car, he lives a life of normality and privilege, but isn’t a spoiled brat, or a rich kid. He’s…average. And that’s what makes it a great film.
Because to people that do grow up that way, it still feels just as terrifying to come out and be yourself, and the way the film presents it is truly special. Every other film about gay people usually ends in tragedy, or heartbreak, or even death, but not this film. It’s a romcom, for sure, there are bits you have to realize won’t be realistic, but the majority of it resonated with me so hard that I either cried or sat grinning into my shirt, and that’s what people have been missing. It’s so alien to see someone relatable to me and my situation on film that I can only imagine what it will do for people half my age. Take a film like Brokeback Mountain for example. A masterpiece, but the story is all grief, that love like that will only end in pain and sadness. Love Simon is powerful because it feels like a relief. Its finally a film for people like me that says ‘it’s OK to be who you are’.
Also, as i cant add this on Facebook, but i can here. This film has made me so fucking happy? It just, grew my soul and spread through my bones and veins. It’s one of the first times I’ve ever really felt proud to be myself, as a gay man.
And for a film to do that for me, specifically? never happened before. It’s why representation is so important, it gives you something to grasp onto when you feel alone. It’s why i want as many people to see it as possible. Because not only will it inspire people like Simon, or anyone in a situation like it, but it’ll educate people that aren’t, it’ll make them think about why people are scared, even if they’re life is great from the outside.
I really hope it does as well as it deserves. Please go see it <3
I’m debating playing this in hard mode. No exp-all run through. Has anyone done it with this game? Does it make it boring or actually harder?
